种是翡翠的绿色与透明度的总称， 也是翡翠结构与质地的表现形式， 是评价翡翠优劣的一个极重要的标志。 懂得欣赏翡翠的人， 非常重视选择种好的翡翠，有的人似乎将种看得比颜色还重要， 故有“外行看色， 内行看种”之说。行内还有句话就是 “种好遮三丑”，指的是有种的翡翠不但可使颜色浅的翡翠显得晶莹漂亮，而且可使不够均匀的颜色由于相互映照而显得均匀， 更可使质地不够细的翡翠显得不明显。 所以有经验的行家都很注重翡翠种的优劣。 翡翠原料， 尤其是做手镯的原料，不怕没有色，就怕没有种。
1、老坑玻璃种
透明度等级最高，水头最足，起莹，按字面理解就是透明得如同玻璃一样，老坑玻璃种可以说是最高档的翡翠的称呼，当然老坑玻璃种它本身也还是有高低中档之分的。
2、冰种
透明度和水头略次于玻璃种,顾名思意，像冰一样透明,质优者常被充为玻璃种出售,属于高档翡翠。所以它也同样有高中低档之分
3、油青种
油育种翡翠是指绿色较暗的一种，颜色不是纯的绿色，掺有灰色或带一些蓝色，因此不够鲜艳，它的颜色可以由浅至深，由于它表面光泽似油脂光泽，因此称为油青种。
4、冰糯/糯种
质地介于透明与不透明，就像煮熟的糯米，我个人觉得是蛮有意思的品种，冰糯的质地也是非常漂亮的，同样分高中低档。
5、花青种
花青种指的是绿色分布呈脉状的，而又非常不规则的一种翡翠，其底色可能为淡绿色或其它颜色，质地可粗可细，例如豆底花青，它的结构晶粒较粗，称为豆底，它不 规则的颜色，有时分布较密集，也可能较疏落，可深也可浅，这类翡翠因此获称为花青种。
6、白底青种
白底青种是缅甸翡翠中分布较广泛的一种，其特征是底色一般较白，当然有时也会有一些杂质，白底青的绿色是较鲜艳的，因为底色较白更显得绿白分明，绿色部份大 多数是团块状出现。
7、芙蓉种
它的颜色一般为淡绿色，不带黄，很淡雅,看不到明显的纤维颗粒的界限.虽算不上透明,但温润而淡雅,有种脱俗的美!
8、金丝种
金丝种指的是翡翠的颜色成丝状分布，平行排列，我们可以清楚看到绿色是沿一定方向间断出现的，当然绿色的条带可粗可细。 金丝种翡翠的档次要看它绿色条带的色泽和绿色带所占的比例多少，以及质地粗细的情况而定，颜色条带粗，占面积比例大，颜色又比较鲜艳的。
9、豆种
